Album Cover Design Exploration
Music has always been deeply important to me, so being able to design for something that inspires me as much as Messy by Olivia Dean felt especially meaningful. The album's celebration of imperfection, vulnerability, and personal growth resonated with me both as an artist and as a person, becoming the foundation of this project.
I chose to work with a seemingly “ugly” and accidental photograph of a flower I took on my way to university, an image I never thought I would use. That decision reflected the core idea of the album: finding beauty in what feels unplanned, imperfect, and uncertain.
My process was intuitive and experimental. I created over fifty different edits in Photoshop, pushing the image in unexpected directions, then brought selected versions into Illustrator to explore composition freely, without strict rules. I also incorporated hand-drawn, messy floral elements as overlays. The final outcome consists of three covers, one main album cover and two singles, all made from the same image, yet visually distinct, embracing imperfection as a creative strength.
Limited Visual Variations
For this project, I also developed two additional covers intended for singles, extending the visual language created for the main album. While the core image remains the same photograph used in the album cover, each design explores a different composition and colour treatment, creating distinct yet connected visuals. These versions can be seen as limited editions, inspired by how many artists release special vinyl variants for singles. Unlike the original album concept, which features a classic black vinyl, these editions introduce coloured records, reinforcing their individuality while still belonging to the same visual universe.
By reworking the same photograph across multiple covers, the designs maintain a strong conceptual link while allowing space for variation and experimentation. This approach reflects the project’s overall idea of embracing different outcomes from the same starting point.
